college life...or lack there of?

well i guess i'm actually just living a different type.

i ran into a friend from high school today on the way out of the city. we're both pursuing design and going to unconventional schools in the city. we talked about what we're doing nowadays, what we have to face, and our futures.

we're going to school for a career we don't need school in, and unfortunately, many people have told us that. i'm talking professors, mentors, and people in the industry. so we didn't listen to our parents and their friends, and go to school for a general business degree, or something completely different that would secure us a moola-making job in the future. (my dad pushed for me to go into pharmacy since thinking about college started becoming important.. uh oh i guess that would trace back to when i was born, and even more so when my brother decided against it too. i know i would never be good at that though.)

well, i guess i'm concerned. but i'm not worried. i believe i'll succeed. i don't know at what type of level, but it'll happen.

we both wondered what life would be like at a state university, namely one that most of our friends went too. we frequently take vacations there to visit, to have fun, to party, etc. it's so much fun there, and super exciting when you see friends.

i mean, if i went to a "regular" college i guess, i feel like part of the start of my weekend would probably be figuring out where the parties were that weekend, or where to go hang out. during the semester though, i'm usually planning when i'll be going to the work room to finish up the work that requires a lot of time because how i do really depends on the physical-what i do. these bags, shoes, and belts don't make themselves, you know!

though i suppose if i allocated my time more wisely, i'd probably have a lot more time for fun. and no, i'm not saying that everyone who goes to regular college doesn't have to worry about their exams, or that they don't care about their education.

i'm not saying that drinking doesn't go on in the city for us collegiates, but it's not the same. my school doesn't have frats, or individual houses with grimey basements. sure, we have clubs, and bars, etc.. (everything that costs more money?) but that constant community feel is just kind of absent. and you might disagree with me as well, but i guess i'm just more straight edge than you are.

don't take this as if i'm complaining though, i don't hope that my lifestyle is filled with college life hard-partying and drinking. i'm not into that either.. but it's interesting to think how different my life would be. what things i would be exposed to, and what kind of people i would meet.

these little 'college vacations' are a good enough taste for me.

i know i have it good too, where i'm at. there's cultural events everywhere, and everything's attainable with such easy access. everyday is different, and there's definitely more exposure to different and new things and fresh opportunities. who doesn't want to be in the city?

of course i'm no longer a new yorker anymore.. i'll be commuting. so that's mad bummer.

well, whatever. life's been good to me. i'll enjoy whatever it throws at me, or whatever i can catch. tehe (Janice, i know i'm a total corndog)

this isn't where i go to school, but can you guess which city it is!? it was one of my recent "college vacations"

  1. Personally, I think that the state college life i overrated. I know that I would feel out of place and awkward right away. And all that partying...seems a bit excessive to me.

It really is interesting to ponder the turns one's life can take.

  3. @PandaWolf - haha i'll agree that the excessive partying is unnecessary, though i wonder what i'd be like under peer pressure and all that too!

@Monisha S. - hahaha i know, darling! i guess it's more like me pondering what my state-college lifestyle would be like. or rather, could be like.

  4. I have the same thoughts when I go home. And when I see the multitudes of straight boys. It's torturous, haha. But then I get back to the city and realize how much I love it up here-even when it's freezing cold.

I'm excited to see you soon!

  5. Hahaha. If I throw you my heart, will you catch it? Don't laugh, I tried so hard. ♥

Anyways, I believe that you are where you are for a reason. And the absence of grimy basements can only cultivate your classiness. =)

  6. this is true michelle, i totally agree with lynnning!! cultivating classiness is where its at. i just went to visit a friend n his party at nyu, and its true, it does get old, just drinking drinking partying all the time. the good thing is that the lack of beer/wine coolers keeps us from gaining all that extra weight! instead, our brains get more and more full of knowledge, independent living, and cultural cornucopia! love you dear!
